About Us

     The Luxxium Group is composed of academics and researchers involved in healthcare organization efficiency and health services research. The collaborative was created to centralize the shared interests of a group of scholars and to make their names available for consultation and research projects.

Most of the members have undertaken health workforce research as part of their career interest. Their consulting work spans a wide range of services and settings. Some of these settings include medical care organizations, the military and the US federal government. Areas of research include medical economics, policy assessment, workforce planning, medical sociology, curriculum development, accreditation and development of academic health programs. Consultants have worked with individuals and institutions throughout the United States, Canada, Taiwan, The Netherlands, England, and Australia.

(2006) The Distribution of Physicians, Advance Practice Nurses, and Physician Assistants In Iowa

The geographic distribution of PAs, compared to physicians and advance practice nurses (APNs), is not well known other than in terms of the number of providers by type licensed in individual states. In Iowa, databases have been constructed and carefully maintained using data from multiple sources, which provide a reliable census record of health care professionals. Because the data is collected, compiled, and updated for all professions in a systematic manner, the database allow for valid comparisons between different health care professions. In Iowa, according to 2005 data, a greater proportion of PAs practice in more sparsely populated geographic areas when compared to physicians and APNs, thereby helping to address the geographical maldistribution of medical providers.

The implications of future health care workforce shortages are numerous and complex, and the complexities only increase when we consider that many health care professions will respond to workforce shortages by increasing enrollment in their educational programs. This opinion piece discusses many of the difficulties an increasing demand for practicing clinicians will place on the PA profession, particularly in PA education.
